First you need to select UML or EMF modeling.
EMF is not UML modeling and will never be.

Personally, I'm just a corporate developer/architect, not a consultant. Our main focus here is simply getting things done quickly and moving onto the next project, we don't get paid by the hour and don't have lots of time to create elegant architectures and project-specific design pattern implementations, that's why we chose andromda about two years ago as our MDA tool. I saw lots of opportunity for improvement (i.e. UML2 2.x support, JAX-WS support), implemented those internally, and then contributed them back to the project. We also liked maven, though it took some time to work through some of the quirks and bugs but it's pretty stable now.

- It's not my house, but what my company is currently buidling and the way people are thinking. The financial crisis was a good opportunity to destroy everything I built the last two years. No more architecture pattern, no more documentation, 100% budget cut and all architects back to coding (we fired all suppliers). The technical debt is growing enormously, but nobody cares except me. And i'm not the only one. At least with MDD, I will be sure that some foundations will be enforced.

However, many people see a major benefit of UML being that there are multiple tool vendors ensuring that they don't get locked in. However, at present, most UML users do get locked in to the tools they use. For me, the main issue is whether I can get off-the-shelf modelled packages which solve significant portions of my current problem and that can be integrated into my application without a significant performance hit. I don't believe that will ever happen with UML since the standard didn't start with that as an objective and there are now too many vested interests to fix UML (or XMI). Look at my website for details of how I am trying to make it happen with Shlaer-Mellor OOA/RD (and Executable UML as a profile of Shaer-Mellor!).

- The MDA market is dying because UML/XMI is a crap standard that hasn't facilitated reuse across the industry. People are so busy trying to reuse the many standards that make up the MDA umbrella that they have lost sight of the fact that they should be trying to reuse software at a higher level than plain old function libraries. A goal which can't be achieved using those standards anyway!
